Mong Kok
Mong Kok is known to be the busiest place in Hong Kong. The streets can become congested at weekends and during public holidays. This may not be suitable for people who don’t like walking in crowded places. However, there are relatively less people on weekdays. The stalls are open as usual on weekdays. Over time, many places in Hong Kong have changed. Hong Kong was once part of the British Empire and had much less Chinese influences on its culture and environment. In 1997 when Hong Kong went back to being a Special Administrative Region (SAR) of China, they developed more architects, buildings, shopping malls, restaurants that were more related to the Chinese culture. However, out of all the changes, Mong Kok remained the same throughout. It looked the same 40 years ago. The reason why is because Mong Kok is the highlight of Hong Kong. It is the first place that most people would think of when they hear the word “Hong Kong”. Somebody who has been living in Mong Kok for a long time said that although Mong Kok is busy and crowded, that is actually what is special about it.
“I have been living in the area since I was born. Living in Mong Kok can be good or bad depending on how you look at it. Living in a very dense area is nothing fun, for a young adult like me may be alright but definitely not for any older generation. But personally I do like Mong Kok.”
Mong Kok is mostly jammed with traffic and people on the sidewalk can hardly make their way down the streets. Despite Mong Kok’s crowded atmosphere, people enjoy it just as much. From little kids, teenagers, adults to elderlies, they enjoy shopping in Mong Kok because you can find anything there, the price is relatively lower than other places. It's an exciting district that offers lots of shopping and dining opportunities. In Mong Kok, there are many different streets. For example, the Ladies Market, also known as Women’s street, sells items specifically for the female gender, including lots of clothes. There’s also a Sports Shoe Street, Fa Yuen Street Market, where young adults can find the latest in fashions! You will always be able to find restaurants and food stalls anywhere. The food and snacks there are relatively cheap. This gives people the opportunity to have a snack in between their shopping.
Have fun shopping!
