Welcome to Hong Kong. Hong Kong is a special administrative region of China, is a city situated on China's south coast. The main language is Cantonese. 93.6% of Hong Kong's population is Chinese and the other 6.4% is from other groups. Hong Kong is known for its outstanding, beautiful skylines. It has a population of 7 million people, being one of the most densely populated areas in the world. Road signs, food menu, and directions include English and Chinese. This is because Hong Kong was once a colony of the British Empire. Hong Kong became a colony of the British Empire after the First Opium War (1939-42). It was only returned to China in 1997. Hong Kong now follows the "one country, two systems" rule, meaning Hong kong has a different political system from mainland China. The Chief Executive of Hong Kong is Leung Chun-ying. Hong Kong has many nicknames. They include names like "Pearl of the orient". This is the most famous among all the nicknames as it represents the shiny city lights from both sides of Victoria Harbour and the high rise builidng. Other nicknames include "Golden Egg", "The world's most vertical City", "The orient Manhattan", "The paradise of shopping", "Food paradise" and "City of life".
